First Blog by Nick Leiman

Hey guys, my name is Nick. This is the first time Im doing this blog thing so bare with me. Im a senior here at ASU and I also live in Avondale AZ. Ive lived here for two years now and Im orinally from New York, where I graduated HS and grew up. Yes that means I love the Yankees, Giants and Knicks, so hopefully ill meet some other fans in the class as well. My major is Criminal Justice and Im taking this class because it is a class that falls under related areas for my major. It seemed interesting enough and I also liked the fact that its a quick class this semester. Im 22, full time student, and also work full time for T-Mobile. A lot of my family members are high ranking officials in law enforcement therefore Im looking forward to following in their footsteps. I should graduate by the end of this year.

As for the first class, I was quite pleased with how it went. To be honest, I wasnt quite sure what the class was about but by the end of it, I had a clear understanding of what we are going to learn this semester. I learned a few new things so far such as the real meaning of what a policy is and how it is incorporated into our society and everyday lives. No one really thinks much about how much work goes into policy making and when I learned about the policy cycle today, it made me think about the details and steps that must be taken to create a policy. The fact that people must first identify the problem, formulate solutions, adopt, implement and evaluate a policy really truly defines policy making. The other thing I really enjoyed learning about today in class was about the different types of policies. I always for one, thought that a policy is a policy. I never quite understood that there are many policies such as distributive, regulatory, self-regulatory and redistributive. Just like anything else in this world, there are always issues with something. When it comes to policy making, the 5 critical issues is something that really came to me clearly during our first lecture. Overall I enjoyed class and look forward to our next lecture.

  1. I was in the same boat as you when I entered the class! I had no knowledge of the basics of how to create a policy or any of the details associated with it. I feel like this semester is going to be an eye opener about what really goes on in the legislature. I enjoyed reading your blog, i see you are from a northern state, so you could probably sympathize with me. I am from Michigan, so not too far away.

  2. Hello Nick, first off thank you for sharing some information about yourself. I too was unsure of the content of this class but so far I am still interested. I also was naive to what goes on with policy making. I knew it was difficult, but never realized the different steps that went into planning. Those steps have to be in order or the policy can fail and that too is interesting. How first a problem has to be identified and then the steps and process take place. Anyway, good post and good luck with the class.
